"Playoff Hopes Dashed as Braves Lefty Chris Sale (Back) Benched"
The Atlanta Braves' top pitcher, Chris Sale, was unable to play in the crucial Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the New York Mets due to back spasms.
According to Braves' general manager Alex Anthopoulos, Sale's status is uncertain and he is considered day-to-day.
Anthopoulos stated, "If it was safe for him to pitch, we would have him out there. He is a crucial player for us, regardless of our goals."
The Braves are aiming for their seventh consecutive appearance in the National League playoffs. In order to secure a spot, they must win Game 2 of the doubleheader, as the Mets have already clinched the second wild card spot after winning Game 1.
A loss for the Braves would result in the Arizona Diamondbacks taking their place in the playoffs.
In place of Sale, Grant Holmes was called upon to pitch on short notice. The right-handed reliever has a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 3.78 in his first season in the major leagues, with six starts and 25 games under his belt.
Sale, a veteran of 14 years and in his first season with the Braves, boasts an impressive record of 18-3 with a league-leading 2.38 ERA in 29 starts. He also leads the National League in strikeouts with 225 over 177 2/3 innings, making him a strong contender for this year's NL Cy Young Award.
