Matt Carpenter activated by Cardinals, Brandon Crawford released
The St. Louis Cardinals activated designated hitter/infielder Matt Carpenter from the 10-day disabled list and granted infielder Brandon Crawford his unconditional release on Tuesday.
The Cardinals also sent former top outfield prospect Jordan Walker down to Triple-A Memphis and brought up infielder Luken Baker from Memphis.
Carpenter, 38, rejoined the team where he spent most of his career this offseason as a free agent. In 42 games, he has posted a .255 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBIs, but he has not played since August 7 due to a lower back strain.
Over 14 seasons in the MLB with the Cardinals (2011-21, 2024), New York Yankees (2022), and San Diego Padres (2023), Carpenter has recorded a .259 batting average with 178 home runs and 655 RBIs in 1,494 games. He was selected to the All-Star team three times (2013, 2014, 2016).
Another veteran in the MLB, 37-year-old Crawford only played in 28 games in his first season with St. Louis after spending 13 years with the San Francisco Giants. He was batting just .169 with one home run and four RBIs for the Cardinals and last appeared on August 10.
Walker, 22, was called up to the major league club for a week when Carpenter was placed on the disabled list. He started the season with the Cardinals but struggled at the plate, and in four games in August, he only had one hit in 11 at-bats (.091) with one walk.
After recording a .276 batting average in 117 games as a rookie in 2023, with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs, Walker has only managed a .145 batting average with four doubles and four RBIs in 24 appearances in the 2024 season.
Baker, 27, made his MLB debut for the Cardinals last year and batted .209 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 33 games. He has yet to play in the major leagues this season. In Memphis, he was hitting .231 with 32 home runs and 79 RBIs in 108 games.
