Juan Soto rejects qualifying offer; Reds' Nick Martinez accepts
Right-hander Luis Severino declined the New York Mets\' $21.05 million qualifying offer, according to a report from Newsday on Tuesday.
In his first season with the Mets, Severino, 30, had a record of 11-7 and an ERA of 3.91 in 31 starts. He also struck out 161 batters in 182 innings.
Severino, who has been an All-Star twice with the New York Yankees (in 2017 and 2018), has a career record of 65-44 and an ERA of 3.81 in 172 games (156 starts) with the Yankees (2015-19, 2021-23) and Mets.
The deadline for players to accept or decline qualifying offers is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. If Severino signs with another team, the Mets will receive a draft pick as compensation.
Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was also one of the 13 MLB players who received a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer this year. However, it is expected that he will reject the offer.
JUAN SOTO
As anticipated, New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto turned down the team\'s qualifying offer, as reported by the New York Post. He will now continue his search for a lucrative free-agent deal.
Soto, 26, had a batting average of .288 and an OPS of .989 in his first season with the Yankees. He also hit 41 home runs and had 109 RBIs, helping the team reach the World Series.
Several big-market clubs, including the Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Philadelphia Phillies, have reportedly shown interest in the four-time All-Star, who was also a Silver Slugger winner this past season.
It is expected that Soto will receive one of the largest contracts in MLB history as a free agent.
