Hector Neris, Cubs' reliever, let go by team
The Chicago Cubs are set to release reliever Hector Neris and promote right-hander Jack Neely, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday.
Neris, who was recently designated for assignment, signed a one-year deal worth $9 million in the offseason. The contract also included a $9 million team option for 2025.
However, this option would have become a player option if Neris made 60 appearances or finished 45 games without any injuries by the end of the season.
This year, the 35-year-old Neris has a record of 8-4 with a 3.89 ERA in 46 relief appearances for the Cubs. He has converted 17 of 22 save opportunities and has issued 26 walks in 44 innings as the team's closer.
Throughout his career, Neris has a record of 41-40 with a 3.29 ERA and 106 saves in 592 relief appearances. He has played for the Philadelphia Phillies (2014-2021), Houston Astros (2022-2023), and the Cubs.
Meanwhile, Neely, who is 24 years old, was acquired by the Cubs in a trade with the New York Yankees on July 30. He is ranked as the team's No. 18 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
In 2024, Neely has a record of 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA in 37 relief appearances across three different minor league teams. He has yet to make his debut in the major leagues.
