Chicago Cubs' Left-Handed Pitcher Justin Steele to Undergo Elbow Surgery, Out for Rest of Season
The Chicago Cubs' top left-handed pitcher, Justin Steele, will undergo reconstructive surgery on his elbow, causing him to sit out the remainder of the season, according to manager Craig Counsell's announcement on Sunday.
It is currently unclear whether Steele will require a full Tommy John surgery or a partial repair, as reported by ESPN.
Steele, who was an All-Star and placed fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting in 2023, has a record of 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 starts. However, he is now 29 years old.
This season, Steele has a 3-1 record in four starts, with a 4.76 ERA and five home runs allowed in 22 2/3 innings, which is the highest in the major leagues. In his most recent game, he pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight batters and only allowing three hits.
Throughout his five seasons with the Cubs, Steele has a record of 32-22 with a 3.30 ERA in 102 games (91 starts). He has thrown 517 strikeouts and 155 walks in 506 2/3 innings.
