Arbitration Ruling Finds Pirates Pitcher Johan Oviedo at a Disadvantage
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo was defeated in the first salary arbitration ruling of the year and will receive $850,000 in 2025, according to a report from MLB.com on Wednesday.
Oviedo had requested $1.15 million after sitting out last season due to Tommy John surgery. He earned $765,000 in 2024.
The hearing for Oviedo's case took place on Tuesday.
In 2023, Oviedo had a record of 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 32 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Overall, the 26-year-old Oviedo has a career record of 13-25 with a 4.32 ERA in 72 games (58 starts) for the St. Louis Cardinals (2020-22) and Pirates.
Some of the other players scheduled for arbitration hearings include Washington Nationals first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King, and Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras.
